Dear Delegates, Faculty Advisors, Staff, and Friends,

It is an honor to welcome you to Kennesaw State University’s 22nd Annual High School Model United Nations Conference. On behalf of the College of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Department of Political Science and International Affairs, Kennesaw State University’s Global Society, and our Model African Union, Model Arab League, and Model United Nations teams, please allow me to thank you in advance for your participation in this model. The reputation this conference has garnered has come not only through the hard work of the individuals in each of those sponsoring and supporting organizations, but also through your outstanding efforts and dedication. It has been, and continues to be, a privilege to work with such wonderful and talented people. Among those are our Under-Secretary General, Amanda Barnes , a veteran of the Kennesaw conference from both sides of the dais, and our Director General, Paul Harris, a three year veteran of the Kennesaw Model UN program.

Delegates, over the next few months you will face several challenges as you work toward conference. You must assimilate not only the facts, data, and opinions available about the issues we have set before you, but you must interpret them from the unique point of view of the member state assigned to you. Often that interpretation must be made from tangential or inferential evidence. But you will not be working alone. In the near future we will publish background guides, written by the directors of your committees, which will help provide some direction for your research. Also, you should feel free to contact me, or any other member of the staff. While we cannot provide specific information about your state’s policy or position, we will gladly give suggestions and advice on how and where to research the topics at hand. You should start your research now by looking at the research links we have provided. Also be sure to check back here regularly for updated information. For instance, email addresses for your committee directors will be posted soon.

Faculty Advisors, we also want to offer our assistance to you. If you are interested in holding an in-service on research methods or team organization please contact me. Within the constraints of schedule, our Faculty Advisor, Mrs. Linda Morrisson, and one or more of the Senior Staff, will come share our insights and experience. I also ask that you check the website regularly as all updates will be posted on our News and Updates page. As an example, information on our ICJ cases will be posted as soon as possible. Other materials, such as the registration packet, have already been posted. Under the Resources link you will find our Division of the Question Diagram, our Draft Resolution Template, and our Rules of Procedure Short Form which is vital both in mock sessions and at conference.

Finally, as we all prepare for conference, consider that the word conference implies discussion, which further implies two-way communication. We are actively seeking to find tools to better facilitate that conversation. In the meantime, please do let us know how we are doing, ask questions about anything that is not clear, and provide any suggestions you have for how we can better serve you as you prepare yourself, or help prepare others for conference.

I look forward to your words and thoughts, and hope to see you all in committee very soon.

Jonathan Edman
Secretary General
